18세기 말∼19세기 초 영국의 공업화에 의한 산업혁명으로 인류 문명이 농업 경제에서 산업 경제 체제로 전환되었다. 이후 프랑스, 미국, 독일에 이어 19세기 말에는 일본, 러시아에 서도 산업혁명이 시작되었다. 20세기에는 인도, 아르헨티나, 한국과 같은 나라도 공업화의 대열에 합류했다. 산업혁명은 1980년대 개인용 컴퓨터의 발명과 인터넷의 등장으로 정보 산업혁명으로 이어졌다. 그리고 지금의 시점에서 미래 학자들은 21세기는 유비쿼터스 (Ubiquitous)’라는 혁명이 올 것으로 예측하고 있다.
